Our Methodology
We believe in transparency. Here's exactly how we calculate the true cost of vehicle ownership.
Official EPA Data
Vehicle fuel economy data comes directly from FuelEconomy.gov, the official U.S. government source maintained by the Department of Energy and EPA. This includes MPG ratings for gas vehicles and kWh/100 miles for EVs.
Fuel Cost Calculation
Gas: (Annual Miles Γ· MPG) Γ Gas Price. Electric: (Annual Miles Γ· 100) Γ kWh/100mi Γ Electricity Rate. We use your custom rates or national averages ($3.50/gal, $0.12/kWh).
Maintenance Schedules
We model realistic maintenance based on mileage intervals: oil changes every 5,000mi, tires every 40-50k mi, brakes every 50k mi (gas) or 100k mi (EV due to regen braking), plus timing belts, spark plugs, and battery coolant at appropriate intervals.
Insurance Estimates
Annual insurance is estimated at 4-5% of vehicle value, decreasing as the car ages. EVs typically cost 10-15% more to insure due to higher repair costs, which we factor into our calculations.
Depreciation Model
Year 1: 20% loss. Years 2-5: 12% annual loss. Years 6-10: 7% annual loss. This reflects real-world resale data. The 10-year resale value is subtracted from total costs to calculate net ownership cost.
Inflation Adjustment
All future costs are adjusted for 3% annual inflation, giving you realistic projections of what you'll actually spend over 10 years in future dollars.
